Can I throw some stones today? After a one of hundreds of calls I’ve done with gym owners I was really fired up to hear what I heard today. I’ve seen some patterns in the experiences with so many gym owners and some of the “pros” in the gym ownership coaching space.
It compelled me to do a breakdown on what mentorship is and more importantly, what it is NOT. Not only so you can make sure you protect yourself, make the right choice but also, so you can better serve your members when they look at you as a mentor.
ABOUT THIS VIDEO
There is an old saying that says “pros hire pros”.
Mentorship has been a vital process in the development of future leaders and thinkers since humans have been around. Back in 400 B.C., Socrates mentored Plato on modern philosophy and logic. Plato picked up his own mentee and Aristotle became as famous as his predecessors.
Warren Buffett was a mentor to Bill Gates. Steve Jobs mentored Mark Zuckerberg. Maya Angelou to Oprah Winfrey.
Are you considering or looking for a mentor? If you’re a developing gym owner, or you don’t have much real experience running a business outside your gym, you should be. Working with a mentor provides innumerable benefits; not only will you receive guidance, advice and help when trying to solve tough problems, you’ll also be able to leverage your mentor’s experience and resources.
At the core of mentorship is forming a bond centered around mutual passion and journey. While mentorship and friendship have many similarities, they are not the same thing.
Mentorship, in order to reach its full potential, must have total honesty, perfect communication and frequent contact. It can take work, but when done right the amount of satisfaction and power generated by this relationship can be immeasurable.
It’s not about the “what” it’s always about the “who”, as in… “who can I get to show me the path who’s done it so I can get to work on what I know works”. Instead of “what do I need to learn and figure out”.
